Its exterior immediately draws attention \u2013 a small, grey shepherd\u2019s hut built from wood and stone, surrounded by a stone fence. A cross atop the roof once served to protect shepherds from dangers, storms, lightning, and evil forces.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"456\" data-end=\"858\">Today\u2019s hut stands on the site of the original building, which was burned down just before the end of World War II. In the summer of 1945, Andrej Preskar rebuilt the hut on the ruins in the same distinctive oval shape it had before the war. This faithfully preserved form, along with its modest size and simple interior, sets it apart from other shepherd\u2019s dwellings \u2013 and gives it unique museum value.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"860\" data-end=\"1076\" data-is-last-node=\"\" data-is-only-node=\"\"><strong>Every day at 1 p.m., visitors can also enjoy a special experience \u2013 a demonstration of traditional <em data-start=\"959\" data-end=\"966\">trni\u010d<\/em> cheese-making, a specialty of Velika Planina. herdsmen\u2019s settlement is known\u00a0<strong>as one of few the settlements<\/strong>\u00a0of such size in Europe and attracts many visitors throughout the year. It is distinct by its\u00a0<strong>typical architecture<\/strong>which symbolises Velika planina. The roofs are covered with pine shingles, which extend rather low. The name of the cottage in the Kamnik part of Velika planina is \u201ca herdsman hut\u201d or \u201ca shepher\u2019s home\u201d, and a pine shingle is called \u201c\u0161inkel\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The settlement is revived every June, when herdsmen return to the settlement and tend to their cattle until September. They are delighted to invite you to\u00a0<strong>taste their dairy products<\/strong>\u00a0or try a typical herdsmen\u2019s lunch; sour milk and buckwheat mush.[\/vc_column_text]<style It was burnt down by German soldiers during the war, and was rebuilt in 1988 on the herdsmen\u2019s initiative. It was consecrated to Snow Mary and this is why 5th of August presents a special holiday for the chapel and the entire herdsmen\u2019s settlement. During the summer, the masses are held every Sunday and several thousands visitors attend the sacred mass or the midnight service on Christmas Eve.[\/vc_column_text]<style type=\"text\/css\" It is known for its patches of snow, which remain in the cave also during the summer.<\/p>\n<p>Dovja Gri\u010da cave is located in the valley Tiha Dolina and is 9m deep. It is known for the legends which were happening near by. The cave, therefore, sheltered many good and bad characters, which were mostly invented by herdsmen themselves. It is recognised by its grass-like leaves and purple, egg-shaped blossom. It is the area with the largest number of cottages, built for tourists and, therefore, adjusted to their needs. The idea for building such settlement first appeared in 1959, during the blossom of the so-called trade union tourism.<\/p>\n<p>Several companies sponsored the built-up of the cottages, and by the end of the year 1964 there were around 60 cottages. The settlement was build according to the plans of the architect Vlasto Kopa\u010d, whose idea was to strictly separate the tourist settlement from the herdsmen\u2019s settlement. Despite this idea, the cottages are built in the unique style and are in their appearance very similar to the herdsmen\u2019s cottages. Kopa\u010d, who was amongst other things also the pupil of Jo\u017ee Ple\u010dnik, wanted to transfer a part of folk architecture into the project of tourist settlement and has succeeded in doing
