The final days of August and the beginning of September are a wonderful time to visit Velika Planina. Summer is slowly giving way to autumn, the colours of the mountain are beginning to change, while the herdsmen and their cattle are still part of the everyday scene on the plateau – Until mid September!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you are planning a visit in the coming weeks, here are a few things worth knowing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The herdsmen and cattle are still on the mountain<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The herding season on Velika Planina usually continues until mid-September<\/strong>, depending on the weather and conditions on the mountain. Until then, visitors can still experience Velika Planina in its most characteristic summer setting \u2013 with grazing cattle, herdsmen, traditional huts and life in the herdsmen\u2019s settlement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Please remember that the cattle are not an attraction, but grazing animals. Observe them from a safe distance, do not feed them and never walk between a cow and her calf.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Preskar Museum<\/strong> is also open daily from 10:00 to 15:00<\/strong>, offering an insight into the traditional way of life on Velika Planina. Every day at 13:00<\/strong>, visitors can also see a demonstration of how trni\u010d<\/em>, the traditional cheese of Velika Planina, is made.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Visiting Velika Planina with a dog<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Dogs are welcome on Velika Planina, but they must be kept on a leash at all times<\/strong>. This is especially important during the grazing season, when cattle are present across much of the plateau.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Please keep your dog away from grazing animals, respect the instructions of the herdsmen and always clean up after your pet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dogs may travel by cable car for an additional fee. A muzzle is recommended and may be required in certain situations, for example when the cable car is busy or when several dogs are travelling in the same cabin. Smaller dogs may also use the chairlift, but only at the owner\u2019s responsibility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What\u2019s happening on Velika Planina?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The summer season is not over yet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On Sunday, 30 August 2026<\/strong>, Velika Planina will host the 4th Trail Velika Planina<\/strong>, bringing together trail runners, hikers and nature lovers. Participants can choose between competitive courses of 6.7 km, 13.5 km and 29.3 km<\/strong>, while a non-competitive hiking route will also be available. The start and finish area will be at Zeleni Rob.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Even if you are not taking part in the event, please keep in mind that the mountain may be busier than usual on this day and that runners will be using marked routes across the plateau.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Take your time and experience the mountain responsibly<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Late summer has a special atmosphere on Velika Planina. The days are becoming softer, mornings can already feel cooler, and the first signs of autumn are slowly appearing across the pastures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When visiting, please stay on marked trails, give grazing animals plenty of space, keep dogs on a leash and take all waste back with you. Velika Planina is a living cultural landscape, shaped by nature, herdsmen and centuries of tradition \u2013 and every visitor can help preserve it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
