The crocus bloom on Velika planina is one of the most breathtaking spring experiences in Slovenia. To make your visit enjoyable for yourself and respectful toward nature, we’ve gathered some useful tips for preparation.

When to visit Velika planina?

The most beautiful moments happen early in the morning or late in the afternoon, when the mountain glows in soft light and offers more peace.
We recommend visiting during the week, as weekends and holidays are often very busy.

🕗 Tip: arrive before 9 a.m. – you’ll avoid the crowds and enjoy the views in peace.

Quick and sustainable access – by cable car and chairlift

The fastest and most sustainable way to reach the plateau is by cable car from Kamniška Bistrica.
The ride takes only a few minutes and lifts you from the valley straight to the views.

Cable car runs daily:

  • weekends: 8:00–17:00
  • weekdays: 8:00–16:00
📅 Full timetable available at www.velikaplanina.si

The chairlift operates every day according to the published schedule.
During peak visitation, the cable car runs more frequently within operating hours.

From the upper cable car station, a six-seater chairlift takes you to the top of Velika planina, where the views open up to purple pastures scattered with crocuses.

This access is also suitable for families and visitors who may not be in the best physical shape but still wish to experience nature fully.

Don’t forget: even though it’s easy to access, you’re still in the mountains – wear hiking shoes, appropriate clothing, and bring sun protection (sunscreen, hat, sunglasses). Always check the weather forecast before heading out.

Parking and car access

If you decide to drive to the plateau, you can choose between three arranged parking lots:

  • Ušivec (about 1 hour walk)
  • Rakove ravni (about 1.5 hours walk)

Daily parking fee for personal vehicles: €12 (cash only).
Parking fills up fast – plan your trip early!

⚠️ Navigation tip: Google Maps may guide you onto closed or unsuitable roads.
Always follow road signs. Access from Kamnik or Črnivec is via the state road Podlom – Kranjski Rak.

What to bring?

  • hiking boots – for a safe step
  • water and snacks
  • a windbreaker or extra clothing layer – weather changes quickly
  • sun protection – sunscreen, cap, sunglasses
  • camera or phone – to capture the beautiful views
  • a small trash bag – pack out what you pack in

Four-legged friends must be on a leash at all times. Always clean up after them.

Where to eat?

On Velika planina, the Zeleni rob inn is open daily, offering traditional homemade stews, sausage, sauerkraut, buckwheat žganci, seasonal soups and other mountain dishes. For dessert, we recommend their sweet cottage cheese dumplings – a house specialty.

On weekends and holidays, the Skodla snack bar at the upper cable car station is open as well, and this weekend we’re also opening the summer garden Pod žičnico.

Visit with care

Velika planina is a natural and cultural treasure.
With small, thoughtful actions, we can preserve its beauty together:

  • stay on marked paths – let the views remain for all
  • don’t pick flowers or step on crocuses – let the purple carpet inspire those who come after you
  • take photos from the trail – nature is most beautiful just as it is
  • respect other visitors – dogs on leashes, and always clean up after them
  • carry all waste back to the valley

Spring is here – experience it with respect

Velika planina awaits you in its most beautiful spring attire.
The crocus bloom lasts only a short time – may your visit be respectful, calm and unforgettable.
