Summer on Velika Planina – The Arrival of Cows, Blooming Nature, and Tasty Alpine Cuisine
In June, Velika Planina comes alive once again in all its beauty and authenticity. After winter and a blooming spring, the pastures awaken once more, revealing a stunning alpine world high above the valley—rich with pastoral tradition and the peace of summer. This weekend, the first cows will arrive on the mountain, marking the official beginning of the grazing season. With them, life returns to the planina.

The meadows are now in their most vibrant bloom. Velika Planina is covered in bright yellow pogačice (alpine buttercups), surrounded by a wide variety of other alpine flowers. The atmosphere is idyllic—nature invites you to hike, explore with your family, relax, and unwind in the fresh mountain air. The weather is already summery, and the views of the Kamnik-Savinja Alps continue to impress visitors each day.
For those interested in the rich cultural heritage of the plateau, the Shepherds’ Museum is open to the public. Housed in one of the restored shepherds’ huts, the museum offers a glimpse into the traditional way of life—modest, but deeply connected with nature and livestock. A special experience awaits daily at 1 p.m. with a live demonstration of trnič cheese making—the iconic shepherds’ cheese decorated with handmade carvings, once created using engraved wooden molds.

At this time of year, Velika Planina is not just a destination for relaxation—it’s a place where tradition meets nature. We warmly invite you to visit this stunning alpine plateau, experience the rhythm of summer life, meet the cows who will remain here until autumn, and enjoy a simple yet authentic taste of the Slovenian Alps.
You can indulge in local culinary specialties at the Skodla snack bar or the Zeleni Rob restaurant, and on weekends, the traditional shepherds’ huts also open their doors to visitors.
