How to get to Kamniška Bistrica and Velika planina
- From Kamnik, drive towards Kamniška Bistrica (approx. 10 km).
- Park at the lower cable car station:

Cable car & chairlift schedule
- Cable car (Kamniška Bistrica – Velika planina):
Operates daily from 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM, every full hour (more frequently during busy periods). - Chairlift (from the upper cable car station to the top of the plateau):
Operates daily from 8:30 AM to 5:15 PM
If you prefer walking: from the upper cable car station, it’s about a 45-minute hike on a marked trail to the shepherds’ settlement.
What can you experience on Velika planina?
Shepherds’ settlement & Preskar Museum
Stroll among the traditional shepherds’ huts that preserve centuries of Alpine architecture.
Visit the Preskar Museum, where you can learn about the life of shepherds in the past – open daily from 10:00 to 15:00.
Trnič cheese-making demonstration – daily at 13:00
Every day at 1 PM, near the Preskar Museum, you can watch a live demonstration of how Trnič is made – a traditional pear-shaped cheese with a romantic story.
The “In the Footsteps of Shepherds” educational trail
An easy circular trail, perfect for families with children.
Along the way, learn about alpine plants, local wildlife, shepherding stories, and life on the mountain through interactive info points.

Alpine flowers & natural beauty
In summer, the meadows burst into bloom – keep an eye out for Carniolan lilies, foxgloves, alpenroses, and many other alpine flowers.
