The Preskar Museum, the only preserved shepherd’s hut on Velika planina, is open daily during the grazing season. It offers visitors a rare opportunity to experience the traditional lifestyle of shepherds – all within a simple wooden hut located in the heart of the highland herdsmen’s village.

The museum stands out with its original oval shape, modest interior, and distinctive exterior, including a stone fence and a wooden cross on the roof – once believed to protect shepherds from lightning and evil forces. The hut was rebuilt in 1945 by Andrej Preskar on the ruins of the original one burned during World War II, preserving its authentic design.

A special experience at the museum is the daily live demonstration of trnič cheese making – a traditional alpine cheese rich in symbolism. Once made by shepherds as a gesture of love, it is now a cherished part of Velika planina’s cultural heritage. Demonstrations take place every day at 1:00 PM in front of the museum.

Visit the Preskar Museum and immerse yourself in the living heritage of Velika planina – a place where simplicity, tradition, and nature still go hand in hand.
