Autumn days on Velika planina have a special charm. The forests are filled with the scent of moss and autumn fruits, and the views stretch even farther. Although the cable car is resting during this time due to regular maintenance, that does not mean the plateau cannot be visited. On the contrary – now is the perfect time to experience Velika planina in a slightly different, more hiking-oriented way, in its peaceful beauty and the silence that autumn brings.
How to reach Velika planina when the cable car is out of service?
You can reach the plateau only on foot – the choice of trail is up to you. Depending on whether you are looking for a sporting challenge or a pleasant walk in nature, you have several options:
For those who enjoy longer hikes and more elevation gain:
- From Kamniška Bistrica via Dolski graben and Planina Dol – a true mountain tour awaits, combining fresh alpine air, streams, and beautiful views. Hiking time: about 3 hours, elevation gain: 1126 meters. More information about the trail can be found at the link.
- Via St. Primož – a sportier, more demanding route that rewards persistence with breathtaking views. Hiking time: about 3 hours and 40 minutes, elevation gain: 1236 meters. More information about the trail at the link.
For those who prefer a closer and shorter access:
You can drive to one of the parking areas below Velika planina and continue on foot. The trails are also suitable for families with children, provided the children are used to moderate walking and gentle ascents. Three options are available:
- Rakove ravni – the largest parking area; from here, marked trails lead to the plateau, taking about 2 hours one way and around 500 meters of elevation gain.
- Ušivec – from this parking area, the trail will take you about 1 hour of pleasant and easy walking among shepherd’s huts and pastures, with an elevation gain of 280 meters.
- Mačkin kot – the closest parking area; the trail from here takes around 40 minutes, with an elevation gain of about 230 meters.
More information about the parking areas can be found at the link.
Before setting out, always check the trail conditions, how steep and demanding the hike is, and whether it matches your fitness level. Make sure you have enough time to return to your starting point in daylight. If you are unsure, it is better to choose a shorter route and spend more time enjoying the beauty of the plateau itself.
⚠️ Important notice: From Mačkin kot onwards, driving is strictly prohibited. Velika planina is a sensitive mountain environment. Please leave your car at one of the designated parking areas and continue on foot – this way you help preserve the unique natural beauty of the plateau, while also doing something good for your body and mind.

Why visit Velika planina in autumn?
Autumn Velika planina offers a different, yet no less enchanting, experience than in the summer months. Instead of the lively pastoral life, you will find tranquility, silence, and the chance to discover the plateau in its calmer form. Views are often even more spectacular, with clearer air and magical autumn colors.
In autumn, temperature inversion is common: while the valley is covered in fog and chill, the plateau enjoys sunshine and pleasant warmth. Another great reason to climb above the clouds and take in the views! You can also check the current weather on the live webcam.
An autumn visit is ideal for anyone seeking a break from everyday hustle, a peaceful family trip, or a more demanding hiking challenge.
