Stroll Among Blooming Pastures and Scenic Viewpoints

Velika planina is renowned for its spectacular panoramic views that you simply cannot miss. Visit numerous viewpoints and take in the sights of majestic Alpine peaks, green valleys, and the surrounding mountains.
A truly special experience awaits at sunrise and sunset, when the sky above the plateau is painted in magical shades of orange, pink, and purple. These days, the pastures are particularly vibrant – covered in countless colorful Alpine flowers that create a fairytale summer landscape.

Discover the Shepherds’ Traditions

During your visit to Velika planina, don’t miss the Preskar Museum – a unique shepherd’s hut that preserves the authentic spirit of the past. Located in the shepherds’ settlement, the museum takes you back to the time when shepherds lived and worked on the plateau.
The story of the hut dates back to 1945, when Andrej Preskar rebuilt it in its original oval shape after the previous hut was destroyed during the Second World War. Today, it is the only remaining hut of its kind, standing out among the others with its simplicity and modest furnishings, perfectly showcasing the shepherds’ way of life from times past.

The museum is open daily from 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM. A special experience awaits every day at 1:00 PM, when you can watch a live demonstration of the traditional preparation of trnič – the famous shepherd’s cheese of love.

Easy Access by Cable Car

You can easily reach Velika planina by cable car, which runs from Monday to Thursday between 8:00 AM and 6:00 PM, every half hour or more frequently in case of larger crowds.
Several mountain inns are open on the plateau, offering delicious local cuisine, and you will be warmly welcomed in the shepherds’ huts by the friendly locals.

Treat yourself to a day in unspoiled nature, admire the richness of blooming pastures, and listen to the stories written by the life of shepherds.
