August is the perfect time to visit one of Slovenia’s most beautiful alpine plateaus – Velika planina. The refreshing mountain air, unique cultural heritage, and a vibrant array of events invite you to slow down and immerse yourself in authentic experiences. This August promises to be especially lively – a festive atmosphere is in the air, and it’s not to be missed.

Shepherds’ Festivities
This coming weekend will be full of joy in the shepherds’ village – on Saturday and Sunday (9th and 10th August 2025), starting at 11 AM, a true alpine festivity will take place on Velika planina. The band Tačke will provide lively music on both days, creating an unforgettable atmosphere in the idyllic pastoral setting.

Day of Trnič – A Tribute to Cheese with a Story
On Sunday, 10th August, between 11 AM and 2 PM, a special celebration will take place in front of the Preskar Museum – Day of Trnič, dedicated to the unique cheese of Velika planina. Visitors will discover the secrets of this symbol of love and creativity. From its crafting to its symbolism – trnič, once given by shepherds to their beloved, continues to captivate with its story and taste.

At the event, you’ll learn:
• how trnič is made and what it’s made from,
• what its symbolic meaning is,
• and how it’s used in modern culinary dishes.

A special feature of the event – you can make your own trnič!

Masses at the Chapel of Our Lady of the Snows
In the peaceful surroundings of Velika planina, you can also attend holy mass. On the feast of Our Lady of the Snows, 5th August, mass will be held at the Chapel of Marija Snežna at 10 AM, and on the Feast of the Assumption (15th August) at 2 PM. Every Sunday, mass is also held at 2 PM.

Preskar Museum – A Tribute to Shepherd Heritage
On the edge of the shepherds’ village stands Preskar’s Hut, now a museum preserving the spirit of times past. During the summer season (from 10 AM to 3 PM daily), the curator will share the stories of shepherds and display tools used for making butter, cottage cheese, hard cheese, and of course – trnič. The hut’s unique features include its traditional windowless, chimneyless design and distinctive shingled roof.

Mountain Delicacies and Sweet Dumplings
After exploring the plateau, treat yourself at Gostilna Zeleni rob, where homemade stews and traditional dishes are served daily. For dessert, don’t miss the best cottage cheese dumplings (štruklji) – a true indulgence with a view of the mountain peaks.

In the Footsteps of Shepherds
For hikers and curious explorers, the In the Footsteps of Shepherds educational trail leads you on a 7 km route from Velika to Mala and Gojška planina. Along the way, you’ll find educational boards, scenic views, and fascinating insights into life on the mountain, past and present.

RESPECTFUL AND RESPONSIBLE VISIT TO VELIKA PLANINA
Let’s not forget that we are guests in nature on Velika planina – let’s respect the rules of responsible visitation:

  • Stay on marked trails to preserve nature and avoid disturbing mountain pastures.
  • Take all your waste back to the valley – leave no trace.
  • Keep dogs on a leash at all times and clean up after them.
  • Do not pet or approach cows – they are calm but need space and peace.

Together we can keep Velika planina clean, safe, and enjoyable for everyone – visitors, animals, and locals alike.
