CROCUS BLOOM ON VELIKA PLANINA – VISITOR INFORMATION
Velika Planina has once again been adorned with its characteristic purple carpet of spring crocuses. This breathtaking bloom, lasting only a few weeks, attracts numerous visitors, photographers, hikers, and nature lovers each year. It is one of Slovenia’s most beautiful natural spectacles and an excellent opportunity for a spring getaway into the mountains above the medieval town of Kamnik.
A visit during the crocus bloom is not only an unforgettable experience but also an opportunity to help preserve nature for future generations. Let our steps be gentle and mindful. Show respect for everything that lives, grows, and tells its story on the plateau.
In addition to its natural beauty, Velika Planina offers insight into its rich herdsmen’s heritage. A walk along the thematic educational trail In the Footsteps of the Herdsmen introduces visitors to the life of shepherds on the plateau, as well as its flora, fauna, and cultural heritage.
When to Visit
For the best experience, we recommend visiting during weekdays or early in the morning, as weekends are often very busy. The most stunning scenes can be enjoyed in the early morning, when dew-covered flowers create a magical landscape. If you plan to visit during the weekend, we advise arriving at the starting point before 9 a.m.
Access to Velika Planina
The easiest and most sustainable way to reach Velika Planina is by cable car from Kamniška Bistrica (Kamniška Bistrica 2, 1242 Stahovica). From the upper station, you can continue on foot to the summit (45 minutes) or take the six-seater chairlift (7 minutes), which brings you to Gradišče—the highest point of Velika Planina. The cable car and chairlift operate according to the regular schedule and may run continuously during periods of high demand.
If you choose to arrive by car, three designated parking areas are available. As the parking areas at Ušivec and Mačkin kot are still partially covered with snow, winter equipment is mandatory. The road and parking area at Rakove ravni are completely clear.
- Rakove ravni (1.5-hour walk to the plateau)
- Ušivec (1-hour walk)
- Mačkin kot (40-minute walk)
When using Google Maps, please be cautious, as navigation may direct you along unsuitable roads or those intended for local traffic (e.g., through the village of Krivčevo), which are not appropriate for passenger vehicles. Use the main road Podlom – Kranjski Rak, where access is regulated and permitted.
If you are arriving from the direction of Luče, please note that the road from Luče to Kranjski Rak is closed on weekdays from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. During weekends, traffic is regulated alternately in one direction.
If you plan to hike from Kamniška Bistrica or other starting points, keep in mind that snow may still be present in forested and shaded areas. Regardless of your starting point, wear appropriate footwear, bring warm clothing, sufficient water, sun protection, and adjust the route to your abilities.
Taste Local Delicacies
On the plateau, the Zeleni rob restaurant welcomes visitors daily with a spacious terrace and magnificent views. Guests can enjoy authentic mountain dishes such as stews, Carniolan sausage, sauerkraut, and buckwheat spoonbread. For a sweet ending, don’t miss the house specialty—sweet cottage cheese dumplings (štruklji), renowned far and wide.
On weekends, the Skodla Snack Bar is also open, offering refreshments and a final opportunity to enjoy the stunning views before descending to the valley.
Preserving Velika Planina
When visiting nature, act responsibly and respectfully: stay on marked trails, do not pick flowers, and avoid stepping on delicate meadows. Capture the beauty of the plateau from the paths. In doing so, we help preserve its unique alpine flora and protect the habitats of numerous animal species.
Four-legged friends are welcome—please keep dogs on a leash and clean up after them.
To encourage responsible and respectful attitudes toward nature from an early age, we have prepared special booklets for children. Filled with engaging and fun tasks, they teach young visitors how to protect nature, understand mountain etiquette, and appreciate the importance of preserving the fragile alpine environment. Through this initiative, we aim to inspire families to visit responsibly and help create a sustainable future for this unique alpine landscape.
The booklets are available free of charge at the lower cable car ticket office, from parking attendants, and at the Zeleni rob Inn.
